Manuel Pinto de Fonseca served as Grand Master of the Order of St. John from 1741 until his death in 1773, making his reign one of the longest in the Order's Maltese period. His administration oversaw the construction of the Auberge de Castille in its final form and a sustained program of naval modernization — the Order still maintained a functioning fleet and exercised genuine sovereign coining rights over Malta well into the eighteenth century.
The .840 fineness on this issue falls slightly below the theoretical standard for the scudo series, a deliberate adjustment the Order's treasury had settled into by mid-century to manage bullion costs without formally debasing the denomination.
