Reverse description The reverse presents a full-length standing figure of Saint John the Baptist, depicted in the Baroque manner as a lean, seminude male figure draped lightly at the waist, holding a tall processional cross-staff with a banner in his left hand and gesturing outward with his right. A lamb, the traditional attribute of the Baptist, is shown at his feet to the right. The circular Latin legend NON.SVRREXIT.MAIOR encircles the figure, a scriptural reference to Christ's words concerning John (Matthew 11:11). The denomination S.X (Scudi 10) appears in the exergue below the figure. The toothed border and fine milled edge are consistent with the high standard of the Malta Mint's gold coinage under Pinto de Fonseca.
