Amanullah Khan's modernization drive in the mid-1920s included a wholesale restructuring of Afghanistan's coinage system, replacing the older paisa-based denominations with a decimal pul system formalized around 1923. These copper pieces were among the first fruits of that reform. The program was ambitious — arguably too ambitious. Amanullah's broader Westernization policies, including dress codes and curtailed purdah, provoked the Khost rebellion and ultimately the 1928–1929 uprising that forced his abdication.
Struck at Kabul, the dies show characteristically uneven workmanship common to the mint in this period.
