| 背面描述 | A spread eagle occupies the central field, depicted holding a scroll representing the Declaration of Independence. The patriotic motto THE FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by decorative elements. Two olive or palm branches frame the lower design, and the denomination TEN 10 POUNDS appears at the bottom. The Latin word SPES, meaning HOPE, is incorporated into the legend. |

Biafra's gold coinage was produced during the final, desperate phase of the secessionist war against Nigeria — a conflict that killed somewhere between one and three million people, the majority from famine. By 1969, the Republic of Biafra had lost most of its territory and was issuing these pieces primarily for foreign exchange, not domestic circulation. They were struck in London by the Royal Mint's commercial arm and marketed largely to international collectors and sympathizers.
The timing matters: the war ended in January 1970 with Biafran surrender. Coins dated 1969 were among the last official acts of a government with weeks left to exist.
