Osterode am Harz was one of hundreds of German municipalities that resorted to printing their own Kleingeld substitutes during the acute coin shortage of 1916–1917, when copper and nickel were being stripped from circulation for war production. This note was printed locally enough — G. H. Lange operated out of Braunschweig, roughly 80 kilometers north — which kept turnaround times short as demand for small change spiked unpredictably.

The DeNG reference places this within the first series of Osterode issues, a detail worth noting because later municipal emissions from the same city became increasingly elaborate as Notgeld shifted from practical necessity to collector-driven production after 1920.
