Schmiedeberg's iron notgeld of 1918 was a direct consequence of the wartime metal requisitions that had stripped German municipalities of copper and zinc coinage since 1916. By late 1918, with the Imperial government collapsing and central coin production paralyzed, hundreds of small towns issued their own emergency pieces simply to keep local commerce moving. Iron was the last practical option — everything more valuable had long since been melted down for the war effort.
