| Reverse description | Three caravels of Columbus's 1492 fleet — the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria — are depicted under full sail on a stylized sea, rendered in fine relief against a mirror-polished field. The largest vessel dominates the right half of the design, its billowing sails and rigging rendered in precise detail. The exclamatory legend ¡TIERRA, TIERRA! arcs along the upper border, with V CENTENARIO inscribed below it in the upper field, and the year 1989 appears to the left of the ships. In the lower exergue, the date 12 DE OCTUBRE and the year 1492 are inscribed, commemorating the fifth centenary of Columbus's landfall in the Americas. |
