Mehmed V's reign coincided with the Ottoman Empire's most catastrophic military stretch — the Italo-Turkish War of 1911–12, followed immediately by two Balkan Wars, and then the full weight of World War I. Nickel coinage of this period was a pragmatic response to the empire's inability to sustain silver in circulation; metal reserves were being cannibalized for war finance. These pieces moved through a system already hemorrhaging territory and revenue.
The regnal epithet "Reshat" was Mehmed V's personal seal name, used to distinguish his toughra from predecessors on coinage and official documents.
