| Obverse description | The obverse features the coat of arms of Malawi centred in the field, depicting a quartered shield supported by a lion rampant to the left and a leopard rampant to the right, with a rising sun in base and a fish eagle atop the crest. A ribbon scroll at the base of the shield bears the national motto. The legend BANK OF MALAWI arcs along the upper periphery, with UNITY AND FREEDOM inscribed on the motto ribbon of the arms.
