10 Heller Randegg

Randegg is a small municipality in Lower Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian communes between 1919 and 1921 — a period when the central government's coin supply had effectively collapsed under postwar economic strain. Municipal administrations were left to paper over the shortage themselves, literally. The three signatories here — Bürgermeister, Vizebürgermeister, and a Gemeinderat — represent the full weight of local civic authority pressed into service as a de facto issuing bank.
