One of thousands of Austrian municipal notgeld issues produced in the years immediately following World War One, when the collapse of the Habsburg economy and chronic coin shortages forced even small rural communes to print their own fractional currency. Kematen an der Krems, a modest farming community in Upper Austria, turned to Gutenberg in St. Pölten — a press that handled a substantial volume of these regional commissions. Three signatories authenticate the note, which is unusually high for a 10 Heller piece and suggests the local council took the formality seriously.
