| Reverse description | A naturalistic coffee plant (Coffea arabica) branch occupies the central field, rendered in fine detail with broad ovate leaves, smaller lateral leaflets, and clusters of coffee cherries shown at various stages. The branch rises from the lower field to the upper portion of the coin. The circular legend 'BANQUE · NATIONALE · DU · RWANDA' runs along the upper periphery, with the date '1985' inscribed at the bottom of the field, flanked by two small decorative dots. |

Rwanda's small-type 10 Francs was introduced as a weight-reduced successor to the heavier KM#14.1, a quiet administrative decision driven by the chronic metal cost pressures facing the Banque Nationale through the early 1980s. The country's economy was under considerable strain from collapsing coffee prices — coffee being Rwanda's dominant export — and trimming coinage costs was one lever among several the government could actually control.
