The Democratic Republic of the Congo has long issued themed collector coinage with no practical circulation intent — a revenue strategy common among politically unstable states whose numismatic output is effectively licensed to European distributors. The Opel Torpedo series falls squarely into this category, produced for the European collector market rather than Congolese commerce.
The Torpedo name referred to Opel's streamlined body style introduced in the early twentieth century, drawing on the aeronautical design language fashionable between the wars.
