Croix and Wasquehal are two small textile-industry communes immediately east of Roubaix, and in the autumn of 1914 they were under German occupation. With French national currency effectively inaccessible, local authorities issued these bons de monnaie — emergency municipal scrip — to keep basic commerce functioning. The Sénécaut print shop in Roubaix produced them under occupation conditions, which makes the survival of any example something of an accident rather than a plan.

The Jeton de Papier catalogue reference JP1418 covers the extensive Nord département emergency issues; the sheer number of distinct commune-level emissions from this single region in 1914 reflects how completely the German advance severed normal monetary supply chains.
