Obverse description The obverse features a radiating composition divided into twelve segments by diagonal lines, each segment populated with low-relief silhouettes of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac calendar. A central medallion in the upper right quadrant bears the monogram 'RF' (République Française) above two seated figural motifs, rendered in a frosted finish against a polished field. The denomination '10 EURO' appears prominently in the upper left, with the legend 'CALENDRIER CHINOIS' inscribed along a curved band below the central medallion. The years 2018 through 2029 are engraved along the outer rim, each corresponding to a zodiac cycle, framing the entire design.

Additional information

The Monnaie de Paris has issued Chinese lunar calendar pieces for foreign and diaspora markets since the early 2000s, positioning itself alongside the Perth Mint and Royal Mint in competing for that collector segment. These are primarily sold through Asian distribution networks rather than through domestic French retail channels.

The Dragon year recurs on a 12-year cycle; the 2024 Gregorian year technically inaugurated this particular cycle on January 22nd, making the 2023 mint date a pre-issue convention common to European mints striking lunar series for the following calendar year's market.
