Malta's Knights of the Past series draws on the island's tenure under the Order of St. John, which held Malta from 1530 until Napoleon's largely bloodless seizure in 1798. The Order's military and architectural legacy is unusually well-documented for a ruling body of its size, which has made it a recurring subject for Maltese commemorative programs. The .9999 fine silver specification — finer than the more common .999 standard — places this issue among the purer strikes in the Central Bank's catalog.
