Three five-pointed stars arc above the shield, symbolising the historic regions of Vidzeme, Latgale, and Kurzeme-Zemgale. Thirteen five-pointed stars encircle the design along the inner rim, referencing the European Union. Latvia joined the Eurozone on 1 January 2014, making this the first year of issue for Latvian euro coinage. The transition ended a 23-year run of the lats, the national currency reintroduced after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 — itself a politically loaded revival of the interwar lats that had circulated before Soviet annexation in 1940.
