| 表面の説明 | The obverse displays the coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia prominently at centre, featuring a quartered shield with a rising sun in the upper half and three lions passant in the lower quarters, supported by a rampant lion to the dexter and a griffin to the sinister, with a decorative oak-leaf and ribbon mantling at the base. Three five-pointed stars arc above the shield, symbolising the historic regions of Vidzeme, Latgale, and Kurzeme-Zemgale. Thirteen five-pointed stars encircle the design along the inner rim, referencing the European Union. The mint year appears in the lower field below the shield, with the country name LATVIJA inscribed along the lower rim in Latin characters. The design was engraved by Jānis Strupulis. |

Latvia joined the Eurozone on 1 January 2014, making this the first year of issue for Latvian euro coinage. The transition ended a 23-year run of the lats, the national currency reintroduced after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 — itself a politically loaded revival of the interwar lats that had circulated before Soviet annexation in 1940.
