The Bahamas gained independence from Britain on July 10, 1973, making this 1978 issue a fifth-anniversary commemoration — though Prince Charles's appearance on a Bahamian coin by that point carried a certain political ambiguity, given that the country had just spent five years establishing itself as a sovereign nation under Lynden Pindling's Progressive Liberal Party.
