Beschrijving voorzijde The arms of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas occupy the central field, depicting a shield charged with a galleon in full sail upon the sea beneath a rising sun, supported by a marlin to the left and a flamingo to the right, with a conch shell atop the shield as crest. A scroll beneath the shield bears the national motto in three parts: FORWARD UPWARD ONWARD TOGETHER. The circumferential legend COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS runs along the upper border, while the date 1978 appears prominently in the lower field. The entire design is executed in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field, encircled by a beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

The Bahamas gained independence from Britain on July 10, 1973, making this 1978 issue a fifth-anniversary commemoration — though Prince Charles's appearance on a Bahamian coin by that point carried a certain political ambiguity, given that the country had just spent five years establishing itself as a sovereign nation under Lynden Pindling's Progressive Liberal Party. The .500 fine silver content reflects a deliberate cost-containment choice common to Commonwealth commemoratives of the late 1970s, when silver prices were climbing toward the Hunt Brothers-driven spike that would peak in early 1980.
