| Obverse description | The arms of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas occupy the central field, depicting a shield charged with a galleon in full sail upon the sea beneath a rising sun, supported by a marlin to the left and a flamingo to the right, with a conch shell atop the shield as crest. A scroll beneath the shield bears the national motto in three parts: FORWARD UPWARD ONWARD TOGETHER. The circumferential legend COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS runs along the upper border, while the date 1978 appears prominently in the lower field. The entire design is executed in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field, encircled by a beaded border. |
