The Bank of Nova Scotia's 1935 Dominion series notes were issued under the provisions of the 1934 Bank Act revision, which for the first time required Canadian chartered banks to maintain Dominion notes as reserves against their own circulation — a structural change that quietly undermined the long-term commercial viability of bank-issued currency. This was, in practical terms, the beginning of the end for chartered bank notes in Canada. The Bank of Canada had opened the previous year, and the writing was already on the wall.
The Canadian Bank Note Company produced this series in Ottawa. Surviving examples in any grade are not especially common; chartered bank issues from this period were called in and destroyed with considerable efficiency after the 1945 deadline for redemption.
