Ceylon's transition to stainless steel coinage in the early 1970s required extensive trial striking before any design was committed to circulation production. This piece is part of that testing phase — pattern and trial issues from this period were produced in small numbers specifically to evaluate die wear, metal flow, and striking pressure across the new alloy, not to document a design change. Ceylon became the Republic of Sri Lanka in May 1972, meaning this trial was struck under an issuing authority that had fewer than twelve months left in existence.
