Oman's National Day coinage commemorates the anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's 1970 coup against his father, Said bin Taimur — a palace overthrow supported, at least tacitly, by British intelligence. The 1990 issue marks the 20th anniversary of that accession, a milestone the Omani government treated as a formal state occasion requiring commemorative currency across multiple denominations.
Bronze was an unusual choice for a Gulf state oil economy by 1990, when most regional issues favored cupronickel or bimetallic formats.
