Uzbekistan's first post-Soviet banknote series, of which this is the highest denomination, was introduced in November 1993 — not 1992, despite the printed date. The 1992 date reflects when the designs were finalized, a common discrepancy in newly independent states rushing to establish a national currency. The som replaced the Soviet ruble at a rate of 1 som to 1 ruble, a parity that held only briefly before inflation eroded it.
This entire series was itself short-lived, superseded in 1994 by the som-coupon and then by the permanent som series. High-denomination notes from the first issue circulated hard and fast.
