| 正面描述 | The obverse features a detailed high-relief depiction of the Pórtico de la Gloria, the celebrated Romanesque sculptural ensemble by Master Mateo located in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The central tympanum shows Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four Evangelists and flanking apostolic figures rendered in finely engraved detail, faithfully reproducing the carved stonework of the original 12th-century portal. Two decorative scallop-shell ornaments flank the lower legend, evoking the emblem of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The circumferential legend JUAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPAÑA arcs around the upper field, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border, with the date 1999 appearing at the base of the coin. |

The Portal of Glory (Pórtico de la Gloria) is the Romanesque sculptural ensemble completed by Master Mateo at Santiago de Compostela Cathedral around 1188, commissioned under Fernando II of León. The 1999 issue coincides with a Holy Compostelan Year — declared whenever July 25th, the feast of Saint James, falls on a Sunday — making it one of the higher-mintage commemoratives in this Spanish large-format silver series.
At 168.75 grams of .925 silver and 73mm across, these pieces were struck in proof format only. The FNMT's large-diameter proof issues from this period are known to vary noticeably in field quality between early and late strikes in a given run.
