| Description du revers | The reverse presents a full-length standing figure of Santiago (Saint James the Apostle) rendered in the style of the famous polychrome statue enthroned above the high altar of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The saint is depicted in pilgrim's attire — broad-brimmed hat, staff raised in his right hand and a book or shell motif on his vestment — set prominently beneath a Romanesque arched portal. The crowned Madrid mint mark appears to the right of the central device. Two circular cross-and-sunburst medallions flank the composition at left and right, and a scallop shell, emblem of the pilgrimage route, is centered at the base. The circumferential legend AÑO JUBILAR COMPOSTELANO arcs around the upper field, while the denomination 10000 PTAS is divided across the lower field, all enclosed within a beaded border. |

The Portal of Glory (Pórtico de la Gloria) is the Romanesque sculptural ensemble completed by Master Mateo at Santiago de Compostela Cathedral around 1188, commissioned under Fernando II of León. The 1999 issue coincides with a Holy Compostelan Year — declared whenever July 25th, the feast of Saint James, falls on a Sunday — making it one of the higher-mintage commemoratives in this Spanish large-format silver series.
At 168.75 grams of .925 silver and 73mm across, these pieces were struck in proof format only. The FNMT's large-diameter proof issues from this period are known to vary noticeably in field quality between early and late strikes in a given run.
