Obverse description The obverse features a detailed high-relief depiction of the Pórtico de la Gloria, the celebrated Romanesque sculptural ensemble by Master Mateo located in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The central tympanum shows Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four Evangelists and flanking apostolic figures rendered in finely engraved detail, faithfully reproducing the carved stonework of the original 12th-century portal. Two decorative scallop-shell ornaments flank the lower legend, evoking the emblem of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The circumferential legend JUAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPAÑA arcs around the upper field, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border, with the date 1999 appearing at the base of the coin.
