The Czech National Bank launched this two-coin gold series to mark the 650th anniversary of the founding of Prague's New Town — Nové Město — by Charles IV in 1348. Charles established the district in a single ambitious decree, laying out streets, markets, and building lots in what was then one of the largest urban planning projects in medieval Europe. The town was intended to absorb the overflow population from the Old Town and to position Prague as a capital worthy of a Holy Roman Emperor.
KM#41 and KM#45 represent the 1998 and 1999 issues respectively, each struck in four-nines gold at the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
