Salta's provincial austral notes were an emergency measure born from Argentina's catastrophic 1989–1990 hyperinflation, when the national government's fiscal paralysis left provinces unable to meet payrolls. Several Argentine provinces issued their own quasi-currency during this period — Salta among them — effectively circulating scrip that workers and vendors had little choice but to accept. The authorization chain references Laws 6228 and 6495, reflecting the legislative scramble to get these notes legal standing quickly.
Two catalogue variants (a and b) suggest at minimum a signature or series change within the run, though the Casa de Moneda handling the print job kept production domestic throughout.
