This is a pattern piece — KM#Pn17 — not a circulated issue. Korea's 1886 coinage experiments came under intense pressure from competing foreign interests: Japan was pushing its own monetary model following the 1876 Ganghwa Treaty, while the Joseon court was simultaneously negotiating with American and German advisors over modernizing the currency system. Whether this specific pattern was struck domestically or abroad remains unresolved in the literature.
