Meles was a Bruttian community whose coinage output was limited even by the standards of small south Italian mints. This uncia falls within the Second Punic War period, when Hannibal's presence in southern Italy disrupted Roman authority so thoroughly that dozens of local mints — many previously inactive or operating only sporadically — issued bronze to meet immediate civic needs. The Bruttian region was among the most volatile, with allegiances shifting between Rome and Carthage across individual seasons.
The ICC#326 reference places this piece within a tightly defined typological group. Survivors in any condition are genuinely scarce.
