Issued under the Lombard duchy of Tuscany during the late seventh century, these tremisses were struck in close imitation of Byzantine prototypes — a deliberate policy that kept them acceptable in Mediterranean trade circuits where Byzantine gold set the standard. The Lombard kingdoms never fully abandoned this mimicry, even as their political independence from Constantinople hardened.
