Desiderius was the last king of the Lombards, deposed by Charlemagne in 774 following a siege of Pavia that lasted nearly a year. His coins struck at Milan — Roman Mediolanum and already a mint of deep tradition — represent the closing chapter of independent Lombard monetary production in northern Italy. The Frankish annexation ended the series abruptly.
The MEC I gap in the reference sequence is telling: this type fell outside that corpus's coverage, leaving CNI V and Bernheimer's work as the primary scholarly anchors.
