Obverse description Central cross pattée within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by the royal legend in Latin arranged around the field. The inscription reads D N DI : SIDIRIVS RX, an abbreviated form of Dominus Noster Desiderius Rex, affirming the royal authority of the Lombard king Desiderius. The lettering is rendered in a characteristic Lombard uncial style, disposed in quadrants around the central cross motif. The overall composition reflects the Carolingian-influenced tremissis typology adapted by Lombard mints. The flan is slightly irregular, as is typical of hammered Lombard gold coinage of the eighth century.
