| Reverse description | The reverse field is entirely occupied by a multi-line funerary Latin inscription recording the biographical details of Duke Frederick VIII, stating his birth on 12 February 1597 and his death on 17 August 1625 at the age of 29 years, 6 months, and 5 days. The text is arranged in horizontal lines across the open field, enclosed within a beaded inner border. A circumferential Latin legend in capital letters runs along the outer border, continuing the commemorative funerary text. Small decorative floral or rosette stops punctuate the legend at intervals. |

| Additional information |
Frederick VIII of Saxe-Altenburg died in October 1625, leaving the duchy under joint rule of three surviving brothers — a dynastic arrangement typical of the Saxon partition system that had fragmented Ernestine holdings for over a century. This mourning thaler, issued collectively in the names of all four co-rulers including the deceased, was struck as both a commemorative and a political statement of continued legitimate governance. The Schnee reference distinguishes at least one die variant within this type.
