Hermann von Brüggeneye, Master of the Livonian Order from 1535 until his death in 1549, issued these thalers from Reval (modern Tallinn) during a period of acute military pressure — the Order was caught between an expansionist Muscovy under Ivan IV and the growing Baltic ambitions of Poland-Lithuania. The thaler format itself was relatively new coinage technology for the region, imported from the German states as a response to the need for large-denomination silver capable of financing mercenary contracts and frontier fortifications.
The Davenport references split this issue across two varieties (9376 and 9377), reflecting documented die differences rather than a single uniform production run.
