A cross pattée appears to the left of the shield. The circumferential legend in Latin encircles the entire design, identifying the joint monarchs Francis and Mary by the grace of God as King and Queen of France and Scotland. The strike is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage, with an irregularly shaped flan and uneven surface relief. |
