A fleur-de-lis appears to the lower left of the cipher and a thistle to the lower right, symbolizing the union of France and Scotland. Small crowns flank the cipher at the upper left and upper right. The circumferential legend in Latin references the Apocalyptic verse proclaiming the victory of the Lion of the tribe of Judah, with the date 1560 incorporated into the legend. The overall composition is typical of the hammered Scottish testoon coinage of the Francis and Mary period. |
