| Descrizione del dritto | Crowned quartered shield of arms occupying the central field, bearing the fleurs-de-lis of France in the first and fourth quarters and the rampant lion of Scotland in the second and third quarters. A cross pattée appears to the left of the shield. The circumferential legend in Latin encircles the entire design, identifying the joint monarchs Francis and Mary by the grace of God as King and Queen of France and Scotland. The strike is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage, with an irregularly shaped flan and uneven surface relief. |
