Beschrijving voorzijde The Kenyan coat of arms is depicted centrally in the field, featuring a shield supported by two rampant lions, each holding a spear, with a traditional Maasai warrior's shield at the centre of the escutcheon. Below the arms, a scroll bears the national motto HARAMBEE, and the denomination numeral 1 appears immediately beneath. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF KENYA arcs across the upper field, while the date flanks the lower portion of the shield, and the inscription ONE SHILLING curves along the lower rim.

Aanvullende informatie

Kenya's first post-independence coinage was introduced in 1966, replacing the East African shilling that had served the region under British colonial administration. The deliberate omission of a regal legend — standard on colonial issues — was a pointed statement by the newly sovereign state, severing the typological link to the Crown. The series ran only three years before a redesign followed in 1969.
