Obverse description The Kenyan coat of arms is depicted centrally in the field, featuring a shield supported by two rampant lions, each holding a spear, with a traditional Maasai warrior's shield at the centre of the escutcheon. Below the arms, a scroll bears the national motto HARAMBEE, and the denomination numeral 1 appears immediately beneath. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF KENYA arcs across the upper field, while the date flanks the lower portion of the shield, and the inscription ONE SHILLING curves along the lower rim.
