The border is formed by a continuous chain-link or beaded pattern encircling the entire design. This interlocking rings motif is a hallmark of the Chalmers shilling and is widely regarded as a symbol of unity among the states. The design is struck in a bold, deeply engraved style characteristic of late eighteenth-century American private silver coinage.
