The Bishopric of Dorpat — present-day Tartu, Estonia — occupied an increasingly precarious position during this period, squeezed between the Livonian Order, the growing ambitions of Muscovy under Vasily III and then Ivan IV, and the spreading disruption of the Reformation. Johannes VI Bey, who held the see from 1528 to 1543, was the last bishop to maintain any meaningful temporal authority over the region before the Livonian War ultimately dismantled the entire ecclesiastical structure of the Baltic.
