Hermann von Brüggeneye served as Master of the Livonian Order from 1535 until his death in 1549, governing a polity caught between the deteriorating Teutonic Order structure to the west and growing pressure from Muscovite expansion under Ivan III's successors to the east. The Livonian Order's minting activity in Riga during this period was partly an assertion of administrative function in a region where political coherence was already fraying — within three decades of this coin's production, the Order would dissolve entirely following its catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Ergeme in 1560.
