Gotthard Kettler and Wilhelm von Brandenburg co-issued this schilling during the final, desperate years of the Livonian Confederation, as the Livonian War ground through the region after Ivan IV's invasion in 1558. The joint authority of the last Livonian Master and the Archbishop of Riga was already crumbling — Kettler would dissolve the Teutonic Order's Livonian branch entirely by 1561, converting to Lutheranism and accepting Polish suzerainty as Duke of Courland. Coins struck under their shared authority occupy a narrow, chaotic window.
The omission of the cross from this type distinguishes it from related issues in the Haljak sequence and likely reflects a specific die or workshop variant rather than intentional iconographic revision.
