Mahadji Scindia rebuilt Gwalior's political authority through military force after the Marathas' catastrophic defeat at Panipat in 1761, and his coinage reflects that reassertion — issued across two decades of near-constant campaigning, treaty-making, and territorial expansion that eventually made him the dominant power broker in northern India.
