| Beschrijving voorzijde | Struck in the name of the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, the obverse displays two horizontal lines dividing the field into upper and lower registers, both filled with thin Persian/Naskh script legends. The inscription reads the royal titulature of Shah Alam II in flowing, characteristically thin calligraphy — the distinguishing feature of this variety. Ornamental dots are interspersed throughout the field in typical Gwalior hammered rupee style. |

Mahadji Scindia rebuilt Gwalior's political authority through military force after the Marathas' catastrophic defeat at Panipat in 1761, and his coinage reflects that reassertion — issued across two decades of near-constant campaigning, treaty-making, and territorial expansion that eventually made him the dominant power broker in northern India. The thin legend variety distinguishes itself from the heavier engraving of earlier dies, likely the result of re-cut working dies as the original hubs deteriorated under sustained production pressure.
