By 1950, Mauritius had been using a rupee-based currency system for well over a century, inherited from the period of East India Company influence and retained through successive British administrations. This copper-nickel issue was among the last to bear George VI's effigy — he died in February 1952, and the colonial mint program pivoted quickly to Elizabeth II types.
The 1950–51 dates are the only years this specific KM#29 type was struck, making the run unusually short even by colonial issue standards.
