The P#27 series replaced an earlier 1 Ringgit design and ran through 1989, by which point Bank Negara had already committed to replacing the small-denomination paper notes with coins — the 1 Ringgit coin was introduced in 1967 but had never fully displaced the banknote in everyday use. That ambiguity kept this series in production longer than originally planned.
Thomas De La Rue printed the full run in London, as they had for most Malaysian currency since independence. The watermark is the sole security feature — modest even by the standards of the period, though counterfeiting of the 1 Ringgit denomination was never a serious documented problem in Malaysia during these years.
