Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, this coin was part of a coordinated global series in which dozens of member states released commemorative silver pieces simultaneously in 1995. Oman's participation reflected Sultan Qaboos's consistent diplomatic posture — the sultanate joined the UN in 1971, the same year Qaboos consolidated power following the palace coup against his father Said bin Taimur.
The .925 silver specification and 28.28g weight place it squarely within the Crown-sized commemorative format adopted by the Royal Mint and widely licensed to issuing authorities worldwide during the 1990s boom in thematic silver commemoratives.
